OPINIONS PLEASE

I was looking at this piece with the initial thought of buying it. However, there are several things about it that I do not like. Having never seen a real one in the flesh before, I'd like the opinion from someone who possible has. I'll refrain from commenting on the problems I personally see in this item, instead, I'll await your comments. Any input is appreciated.

What the heck is it??? I've never seen one before but, real or not, it looks pretty bitchin' and I'd like to have one!!

Kinda looks like somthin' that was hanging around the neck of an expensive bottle of champagne, non??

I don't know what happened. When I tried it after you said it didn't go anywhere, it didn't go anywhere. I tried it again and it worked! Try kicking your computer, mine worked after after a healthy boot.

It is the Hermann Goring Commemorative Medal of the German Academy for Aeronautical Research (say that ten times fast). It looks nice, but I see some problems, ie. makers mark, silver content, number of links in the suspension device, etc. This is the first I've seen outside of a book.

Interesting piece. Even if it turns out to be a reproduction it would be nice to have IF the price is right!!

Yep, got it sorted now!

I would say straight away that its a fake, without even getting the old reference book out!
The lack of quality gives it away, look at the feathers and the shape of the swastika, very poorly done.

An interesting piece though.

We have had these on the forum before, usually out of some auction house. These are massively faked, and are very rare.

an excerpt from Fuhrer and Fatherland Vol 2

"..It was approved for award, given in the name of, and personaly presented by the President of the Academy, Hermann Goering. It was to be awarded to those persons, both German and non-German, who had made a significant contribution to the advancemnet of aeronautical research. Those persons selected to recieve the medal automatically recieve membership in the Academy.

Membership in the Academy was very restricted, and the commerative medal was also regarded as a badge of membership. As of 1 March 1942, total membership numbered 150 pesons, with another 11 being introduced to the ranks during the remainder of 1942. Among these new members was Reich Minister Albert Speer (1 September 1942) who was awarded honorary membership."

Fancy Champagne bottle indeed.

James, It is most likely a repro as an orginal pin is extremly rare and the quality is a little lacking on this one. but if the price is right it would be a nice piece to have. Please let us know what they are asking for is item.>J<

one you mentioned in For Fuhrer and fatherland, page 293 was once mine. I
had two and sold Gary Walker, my long time friend, the one in Angolia's
book.

My advise it to stay away from these if you don't know what to look for.
ALL the fakes are cast copies of the originals. The detail is magnificent
on the originals.

Hi Guys.
I really didn't think it was real, but, stranger things have happened. I've never seen one of the up for sale before. The price that the individual wants for it is $1500.00 (ouch). Had it been real, it probably would not be a bad price. Like most hihger end or rare items, you'd never get the optimum price for it unless you had a collector looking for that certain item. If I tried to sell a Navy Honour Roll Clasp, I'd never get the price you see in the books for it. The detail and quality do not compare to the original (from what I can see from the reference books I have) but it's pretty good. Like I said, I've never seen this item up for sale before, either real or fake.

Ah, I was wondering how long it would take before these bloody things reared their ugly heads again! This is a [not very convincing] repro of the aforementioned badge in silver - the 'sponsors' badge. Only one was actually awarded!
It's highly likely that only the one was manufactured in silver, although specific production numbers are known, numbers of known survivors are vague.
These items are extremely rare and one in bronze would be £3000+, and as for a gold example? Ask Mr Ailsby. He briefed me extensively on matters such some time ago, but rest assured, it blows a KC with oaks in to the weeds!

Have to agree with bill on this and support what he says. i don't have an original but have seen one and the detail is superb. The one shown is extremely poor in comparison.

From memory they were awarded in bronze, silver and gold class, with the rarest of all being the silver class.
