    L/56 u-baot badges

I was wondering if any fellow collectors have come across fake L/56 hm u-boat badges.

If so could they let me know the particulars to look for.

The inforamtion I have on origianl pieces is that they should be made of zinc, have a solid swatika, vertical flat pin, hm in raised relief and the catch soldered to a circular flat plate.

If there are other things to look for I would like to know.

    Regards
    Peter C

      Peter,

I had three examples of the U-Boat badge by this maker (Funcke & Bruninghaus). One had a flat pin and two had needle pins. The two with needle pins had different hinges, but both had the retaining hook on a little disc plate as you descripe, made from round wire stock. The wide pin version had the retaining clip from flat wire stock, but also on a small disc plate. Only the wide pin example had the maker mark, L/56 as you describe, in raised characters. All were zinc, and all had an identical die flaw. There is a small raised dimple which must be from a tiny dent on the die, on one of the inner small wing feathers on the left hand side, near the top, as you look at the badge.

Every other example I have had by this maker had the same small flaw.

      Hope this helps

      Gordon
