Olympic medals

I was wondering what/why were these medals issued? Sure seems like there`s an awful lot of them around.

A lot of them were given, many copied

I am sorry to say that I could not make out why those medals were given. I tried searching on the internet but I was not successful. Anyway I will be asking a friend of mine who is doing research on the topic “Germany before Hitler”. I think he will be able to provide some details about them.
