    Revisting the Paper Packets

Some of you might remember we discussed these paper packets a few years ago?
They have been turning up for a number of years now, one seller on E-Bay, has a huge amount at the moment, almost every 57 medal and badge you can think of!!!
They always look to be in mint condition, and don't look to have ever had a medal or badge inside???
They have the name of the decoration on the front of the packet, and a capital "A" on the reverse....
The "A", in the past, has been said to reference Assmann, often dealers say that in their description!! Funnily enough though, they are usually paired up with S&L's never with Assmann's!!! Even then, they appear unused and mint!!
Maybe the Assmann attribution came around because it was the only explanation for the "A" they could think of??? I don't even think Assmann made all the decorations that these packets cover including Ehrenblattspange??
One explanation for them is that they could be retailers packets, to put a medal or badge in when it was purchased?? They could be unused stock maybe???
I wonder if anyone else has any thoughts on them, or if any new information has come to light since they were last discussed???
    Here's a couple of examples.......

I remember having bought some badges that came with such a packet in the beginning that i collected 57's. I think they were indeed S&L's. No idea where these packages come from. My packages ended in my trashcan. I still have around 10 different Assmanns, none came with a packet. And I also never saw an 'honest' group that contained such a packet.

      Thanks Luud!!!
I don't see any connection to Assmann either!!!
I think if they were Assmann packets, they would most likely have either the "Assmann" name or their stylised "A"

I haven't handled one to see if they have any age to them, or are quite newly made??
They could be from a retailer of 57ers....or just some fakes someone has made??

I've never been a strong believer of these packets ... they often turn up. Guess someone printed these at home to pimp sales ?

Funny how, after just discussing them yesterday, an E-Bay seller (mostly known for selling crap) has just listed a whole bunch of them.....once again all in MINT condition!!!!
I am beginning to think they are just modern fakes??

            A nice selection for sale ... at a whopping 6,50 € / packet .... I'm not buying it ( with pun intended )

I have bought my bags (4x pieces) vot very many years get from an experienced dealer. that was a time where one has not yet properly collected the model 1957
He told me the story that these bags came from a prison print shop.
This prison, I think it was in Nordrhein-Westphalen.
Got torn off because it was too old.
during these works several cardboard boxes of unused bags were found.
Why these bags did not come to the manufacturer of orders .... I don't know?
Maybe the company closed it before and nobody needed these bags anymore.
Therefore one will never find a complete set.
              Because they never came together.
I consider them old and original.

Thanks for that...it is an interesting story....true or not, I don't know!!
If they are old, then they have a chance of being "good"!!
I am really curious about them now, and think I will have to buy a couple to examine them myself!!!

                  They're just old and good!
But they have nothing to do with the badge.
                  Since they were NEVER delivered.
and NEVER been filled with badges.
But as a piece of paper I think good!

I also have such a paper bag. Same „A“ on the reverse. To me there is no doubt that it‘s an old piece.
Don’t know for sure about the eBay offer, but to me it look like there are some nice bags for sale. Why so sceptic about their origin?

From what everyone has said, there seems no doubt that the packets are old....
What I am trying to learn, is who they were made for in the first place.....
Not for a 57 maker, so maybe for a 57 retailer???
                      What is the "A" for???
Why is there no retailers name on the packet such as Sedlatzek....
It also seems to me that some dealers must have bought a load of packets, and are now pairing them up with the matching decoration, as if they have always been together, when they clearly haven't, as we have already heard the packets are always mint ( as found) and were never used!
There are now more for sale than I have ever seen, which seems a little strange....
I would have expected a load to come up for sale when first found, and then they would become scarcer over time???
At least the original attribution to Assmann seems to have been dropped!!!

                        Hello Alex,
because there were never ever such a piece in used condition in a credible 57er group.

All were new and they exist in masses.

                        best regards

                          Hi,

I assist Pattex in this point. I'm sure, that these pieces were made after the establishment of the term "1957", and that term existed not from the beginning in the 50s and 60s (and 70s?).

                          Uwe

I never liked these either. Stamping each individual packet to correspond with a certain award seems counterproductive for the post-war period imo.

                            Regards,
                            Nick

As I said, these bags NEVER went to a manufacturer of medals (1957).
Printed in prison and never delivered out.
