    S&L 800 Oakleaves.

    Hi guys,

It's been absolutely years since I've posted on WAF, so I hope there's still a few of you around that remember me :-)

Anyway, what do you think to these 800 marked S&L Oakleaves?
"Wartime compatible" or a nice early 57er set?

    Cheers

    Dave

    Hi Dave,

it is definitely not a "57er set".
"57er" pieces must have been changed in the design; here was no change required.

      Thanks Uwe.

Perhaps I should have said postwar produced rather than 57er.

        Hi Dave,

I fear this possibly is a cast-copy of a postwar 57er period set of oaks. Too many red flags for me.
Smooth back, a line running across the side of the oaks. And the odd missing piece on the front.

I've been studying the pics for an hour or two, and I think I have to agree with Mathijs......
The Oaks don't have the 3rd flaw, which would be where I have circled....

That means they should be an early set, but the finish doesn't look like that of an early set!
As Mathijs mentioned, they appears to be a casting line around the edge.....

That coupled with some rather soft features on the obverse, plus the shiny reverse (which could be where it has been polished to remove casting holes) make me lean towards being a casting of an S&L set. rather that a genuine SL made piece!

Here are mine very early IMO wartime made Oakleaves, made my S&L.
The quality on these is extremly high, with polished backside fully frosted as you would expect from a awards as high as the OL.

What's the price of such a beauty? I only have a later peace of Steinhauer&lueck, with and one without swords.

I am looking for a one like yours

Pfff hard to put a value on them. I remember when I was looking for a set I had 2 people offering them to me for between 3000-5000 Euro's

I always felt that was a bit to high, and I bought mine with my S&L B frame for a fair price. The interesting thing is, that they almost never come up for sale. The true early S&L Oakleaves which IMO are wartime produces, are way more scarce then the awarded Godet pieces.

They are out there, if you look hard enough but don't expect a cheap deal.

Look for either of these types.

On the lower set below, I forgot to point out that the angled line is visible below the third leaf on the left, but does NOT extend up the wall of that leaf (which it does on postwar sets). Although there is "dot of darkness" on this set on that wall, it is just a blemish and not part of an extended line. When I wrote the article ten years ago for Dietrich's magazine, I had already noticed that some sets, which I felt were period, had begun to show the line below the leaf but the line did not extend up the wall, so the line itself below the leaf was not itself a disqualifier, but the complete line, extending up the wall, would be. In the article the complete line is shown and pointed out with two red arrows, but the article simply says "line" thereafter when it probably should have said "complete line" not to confuse.

                        Very nice mate

You don't happen to know the dimensions and weight of your Oaks do you?

                        Thank for the opinions all

                          Hello Dave,

They are attached to my Knights cross, which is in the bank vault, so I can't help you with that sorry,

                            Ah ok, no worries

Does anyone know dimensions and weight for a set of S&L Oaks?
