    WW1 magnetic EK1

This piece looks bit weird but seems genuine to me, what do you think?

    It does look strange Andrew!
The first thing I noticed was it has a solid hingeblock, but a thick catch, which would point to it being a late 60's transitional piece.
The finish on the core looks unusual for S&L, possibly been repainted?? I will have to check my S&L's to see if the core is a correct match...it also seems to have some holes or pitting in it??

IMO EK I from Unknown maker (counterpart straight 9). The needle and hook are replaced and IMO from a 1957 award. Also looks like repainted.

The core and frame are the same.

            Hello Nigel,

Sorry for the late reply. The cross is 42 x 42 mm.

            Best,

            Andrew

              Thanks Andrew!
The hardware is wrong for an early 42 x 42mm S&L, they should have either the 1st type wide pin, or the 2nd type thinner tapering pin, and either the thin catch or the "double" catch.....not the ones on this piece!!

So, S&L used different left over cores and frames from other makers? Correct me if I wrong you only can regonize S&L on the hardware?

No, S&L used their own cores and frames.... no-one else's! So far, I have only looked at the hardware, I still haven't compared the frame or the core with S&L's or any other maker.

Looking at the backplate on Andrews cross, the silver finish looks typical for a later piece, and the shadow created by the pin would suggest that it was finished after the current hardware was attached?
@Green, could you post a closer view of the date on the EK2 you showed, to better compare it with Andrews.....
The frames on both pieces look a good match!!!

IMO the paint on the back is modern silver spray can finnish, after they atached an other needle hook. Just look at the scratches, they are painted as well! IMO the hinge block belongs to the cross and is not replaced (see the cross in the link). IMO only the needle and needlehook are replaced!

Here is a closer vieuw on the date.

Thanks for that.....yes, looks like the same core!
I agree, replaced catch and pin and re-finished after.
                          Unusual to see!!!
