    "Cyborg" EK1

    Gents,

This cross seems to me a combination of post war (not even early) ST&L hardware with a 2nd Class front frame and a magnetic core with swastika.

    Is this a Souval?

    Thanks.

    Andrew

For me the cross itself appears to be a floch fake with the original hardware replaced to try and mimic a 57 version.

It is Souval's post war attempt at making a "Schinkel B". The use of an EK2 frame and St&L's third style pin is not uncommon for Souval either.

      Regards,
      Nick

Agree with Nick, if you remember a few years back Andrew, you posted an EK2 with the same frame, but a blank core, a few people dismissed it as a fake....but its still sat nicely in my collection!!!
Anyway, its a nice variant for the Souval collector, and the blank core version made for a wearable Austrian vets replacement piece!!

If it's an attempt to make a B why is the date not a round 3?

It wasn't a serious attempt at making a fake to fool, the cost of a new core die just for this one type of EK have been too expensive to justify I would imagine!!
The frame has "the look" though don't you think...

                A B from my collection.

I don't think the one in this thread comes close.

As there were no B first class it shouldn't fool anyone.

Personally I don't think Souval's intention was to fool anyone as - at least the little I know about it - their awards were very easy to identify, not so? In particular to create fantasy items (pairing brand new pin device from ST&L, a magnetic core from a period EK1 and a Schinkel B 2nd Class frame - it does not make any sense it terms of gaining profit or anything. I am not sure about the market value of the TR awards in the 70's but I think they were cheap and did not make any sense to fabricate such items to fool collectors as the - that time - brand new pin device clearly showed that it was a newly assembled award.
