    Imperial postwar Silesian Eagles

I also was able to pick up an early postwar made Silesian Eagle 2nd class with swords. It's a nice addition to the 1st class pinback piece that I had for a while now. The enameling is just beautiful evenly done.
It's starting to be a flock of Eagles ...

    Best regards,
    Alex

              Thanks guys.

Rudy...thanks, it's an ever growing collection. Just when I want to take it easy for a while - I keep finding more interesting pieces....

Nigel, so far I've been focusing on the enameled variants only. I'm sure I'll pick up a non-enameled piece one of these days though .... In fact I believe I might just know where I might find such a piece

              Best regards,
              Alex

Beautiful birds with great finish & enamel Alex!

I seldom visit this forum but when I saw the title of your thread I had to look because I am a fan of these too and I have a few Weimar/TR specimens. Also interesting for me to see they re-introduced the Weimar period devices (swords/wreath etc) on the '57 version that had been banned during the TR period: I didnt know that.

Again, congratulations on your beautiful Silesian Eagle sets!

                Regards

                  Hi JC,

... to see ... the Weimar period devices (swords/wreath etc) on the '57 version ...
You can see here a copy/reproduction of a Weimar period awarded Silesian Eagle.

Based on the German law from 1957 it was allowed, to wear the awarded Silesian Eagles.

But it is not a "57version", because 57er versions could only be officially allowed orders and decoration from the Third Reich period 1933 up to May 1945, the special versions in a changed design.

Not all what you can see here in this 57er section is a 57er version, based on a part of the headline: "... including Post-war and Veteran-related items."

                  Uwe

                      Hi JC,

thank you very much for the kind words. I'm glad to hear you like the "eagles". Indeed they are beautifully finished and the quality of the enameling is very good.

                      Best regards,
                      Alex

You are right Uwe. Sorry, bad choice of words on my part... The SE didnt need to be redesigned since it was a pre-TR piece (like the Balten Kreuz)

What I really meant to say was that post war produced decorations are normally subject to the same award rules/regulations etc as those in force during the period. In the case of the SE the "additional devices" (swords, wreath etc.) had been officially banned in 1934 (or 35?) so I found it interesting
to see post war produced SEs with swords

                          Regards

                            Hi JC,

the Silesian Eagle was first awarded in 1919, later continued in 1921.

First only 2nd and 1st class, since 1921 both classes with additional swords or/and oak leaves.

Since 1933/1935 the wear of the Silesian Eagle was officially sanctioned, but only in the first form without swords and oak leaves.

The same is valid for the allowance of the wear of the decoration in the German law from 1957: only 2nd and 1st class, without the swords and the oak leaves.

"Real" originals are made in blackened iron. Several were made in bronze, and I think, that was not a problem.

Never, not in 1919, in 1921, in 1933, in 1955 or in 1957, an enamelled version was officially allowed.

Text 1940 in von Hessenthal/Schreiber, Die tragbaren Ehrenzeichen des Deutschen Reiches, page 118:
"Das Abzeichen besteht ... aus mattgeschwärztem Eisen (also nicht emailliert) ..."
Quick translation: "The badge is made from matte blackened iron (so not enamelled)"

But they had been produced enamelled, in 1919 and in 1955. It was a question of the price .

                            Uwe

Thank you for the additional insight Uwe. I find they are all nice so I got some of each type to cover "the range": enamelled, tombac, iron and zink

                              Best regards
