Better photo's of the badge.
As Nigel said looks like the hinge might have been replaced.
Pin has same gold tone as badge.
Catch is the wide type found on later manufactured pieces.
The black under pin and catch is not solder. It is a black paint.
Maybe a flux of some kind to join the hardware to the badge.
Is the badge itself S&L?

Yes, the badge looks to be from the S&L die, possibly a later piece, judging by the finish, if so, then the thick catch and black area's around hinge and catch are typical.
Neither the hinge or pin is typical for S&L though....its strange that the finish on the pin matches that on the badge, otherwise I would have said both hinge and catch were replacements???

Same type bent catch mounting as on mine.
Badge itself looks the same.
Pin and hinge is most likely replaced.
Looks like a war time bent wire hinge.
I'll post a side view of it.

The hinge, and indeed the pin look very much like the type Deumer used on their BWB.......

They may have filed down the "foot" but otherwise????
We have seen Deumer hardware and parts incorporated into S&L pieces before, always later (post 68) pieces. It is thought that S&L bought up Deumer's remaining stock when Deumer ceased 57 production, this could be an example of that, in which case the hinge isn't replaced at all???

A late manufactured S&L piece with a mix of S&L and Deumer hardware.

A close look at the foot of the hinges seems to confirm your thoughts.
It looks like the bottom of the foot that faces the bottom of the badge appears to be cropped or filed down.

If we have called this one right, its quite an interesting piece!!
Should date from around 1968, and would be the first time we have seen Deumer hardware on an S&L U-Boat badge, we have seen mixed parts badges and medals before (S&L using up the old Deumer stock) but not on a U-Boat!!
