Here's a war time Souval silver version marked L/58. Scarce to find that mark I think?

I hadn't considered that, but now you mention it I guess it could be. I have never seen a wartime marked example before. I guess Antonio is the man to ask.

edit - it might be g a good idea if someone could download the pics and post them in case it's removed from the website now that it's sold.

In his book ITALIAN-GERMAN MEDAL for the AFRICAN CAMPAIGN, Antonio states, "In fact it was Souval himself who probably continued the manufacture of the I-G medal for the African campaign even after the war, using an unknown method....." "Souval may have used the still good dies employed in the wartime production, or it is possible he just limited himself to stamping the L/58 markings on those specimens left over from wartime." (p69-70)

I'm resurrecting this thread 2 years later, since I just realized that I never got around to posting better pictures. My daughter was born just after my last post, I guess I had other things on my mind

Thanks for the pics Steve, and belated congratulations on the birth of your daughter!!!
A very nice example of the Afrika medal in Silver, and again, we can clearly see the mis-strike on one side, typical of Afrika medals from this period, in both bronze and silver!!!

Am I understanding correctly that these thicker ones with the bubbles are from the 70's/80's?

Hi Steve!
I am not sure exactly when they changed from thin to thick!
The earliest pieces, 50's/early 60's are of the solid bronze type (no silver yet seen), thin with no raised dots, then the raised dots and silver/bronze coloured types appeared, I would guess in the later 60's, while the thicker type with raised dots, is the last one made, probably 70's onwards, but I don't think they made them into the modern era, possibly 1980+ before production ceased?
