    Campaign Shields on Backing?

Haven't really dove into these shields yet, but those I have seen never had any fabric backing. Was this how they were meant to be worn in the 57 regs, or is this a fake, or...?

First ones I've seen with backing.

Any I have do not have any backing.

They didn't come with backing cloths, unlike the wartimers!
Fakes often have cloths attached, maybe to hide the reverse, but some examples have had cloths added, that look good, perhaps attached by the vet, or I guess, by a collector who thought it might improve the look of the piece???

I agree with Nigel's comments re the backing on this and other shields seen with any backing attached, as for the 57' regs, contemporary catalogues, books and official publications show the shields "naked" with out any form of backing, unlike their wartime brothers.....very rarely seen worn by veterans in images, indeed only allowed to be worn in the Bundeswehr as a device on a ribbon bar.
        Prost ! Steve.

So were the shields themselves unofficial, as they could only be worn as ribbons?

They was not allowed on Bundeswehr uniforms, but vets could wear them on their -different- uniforms or on civilian clothes as well.

                Hi,

                Brig:

If they were unofficial, they could not be worn on ribbon bars.

They were allowed on Bundeswehr uniforms, but not in the original size on the sleeve.
They could only be worn as 9mm minis on ribbon bars (Bandschnalle) or as 16mm minis on the small medalbar (kleine Ordensschnalle/Miniaturschnalle).
In civil, but not on the uniform, they couls be worn as 16mm minis on a mini chain (Ordenkette/Frackkette).

Clearly, this backing has been used for something else prior to the '57er shield. Notice the other set of holes from some other badge.

As already mentioned this is not a factory-made backing, but it is not unusual that veterans added a piece of cloth to fix it on their jacket for reunions and so on.

The shield itself seems to be a wonderful earliest example, made by S&L.

                    best regards

I imagine they could, if the shield was redesigned to be a ribbon and medal, the shield itself could be an unofficial form

Lets not forget guys, the 57ers, and their associated pieces were'nt made for the Bundeswehr, and any rules and regulations pertaining to the BW had no power over what any non BW vet may or may not wear!
Despite what we are sometimes told, the Ordensgesetz, was not strictly adhered to by many vets, if they wanted to wear more classes of the same award than they should have done....they did......if they wanted to wear medals they won, but weren't officially allowed (Westwall, Flower Wars etc.).....they did, if they wanted a medalbar made up in a particular (non regulation) order......they did!!!
Regulations may tell us how things were supposed to be......but real life was different, and vets groupings, ribbon & medalbars show us how things really were!!
