The ribbon bar of Flottillenadmiral Robert Gysae

Interesting to note is the Legion of Merit, because Gysae served four years as Navy attaché in the United States.

There are so many things I like about this thread. Firstly, thank you Sepp for starting another cracking good thread. I'm just going through the RK thread again at the moment. The information you've collected is an outstanding reference for all of us. They should give you lifetime membership or something. Secondly, I really like the way everyone else has joined in. These collections are just amazing and it's so nice to see the whole group contributing. So often Sepp has soldiered on alone with these threads. Not so here, which is why I like this particular forum so much.

Thirdly, I notice that in post 121 Oberleutnant Hans Kreuzer has replaced his wartime DKiG with a Souval example, which is why I like collecting Souvals along with everything else. I wish I had some stuff to contribute, but I'll certainly keep watching anyway.

Thanks a lot Tony for those kind words

                  Take care, my friend.

The second to last medal (post #140) and on the ribbon bar above, bottom row, second ribbon is the Royal Victorian Order, either Commander or Lieutenant grade (I can't tell which).

                      Hi Guy,

Going by the photo of it in wear above I would say it is Member's Grade, 4th or 5th Class.

                            Pierce,

But the piece is enamelled; the Member version is in silver -- all higher grades in enamel. From what I recall reading, Member grades 4th and 5th class were changed in the 1980s so that 5th grade is Member and 4th grade is Lieutenant.

                            Cheers,

                              Hi Guy,

You are correct- they were changed in the 1980s, but I am not sure when von Michael was awarded his (before or after?), so to be sure I mentioned both grades. I know very little about British Orders. I would assume a Commander grade would be a neck order?

                                Hi Pierce,

The Member, Lieutenant, and Commander grades are all breast badges; Knights Commander and above wear the neck Order.

                                Regards,
                                --Guy

Edit: Bratwurstdimsum, who owns (owned?) the original medals, identifies it -- in 2007 -- as "Member Fourth Class"
                                WAF thread.

Interestingly, this Order is the "Full Member" Order; "Honorary Member" grades have a white strip through the center of the blue.
