    Small "Nachless" of a U-Bootmann.............

Gentlemen, recently picked up this small "Nachless" (set) of post war awards/badges which belonged to a U-Boat man, a DKiG holder, Heinz Pfannenshmidt, who won the DKiG as a result of actions as a "Bootsmannsmaat" (Petty Officer 3rd class) on board U-870 (part of 33. Unterseebootsflottille) on March 14th 1945, Heinz also held both classes of Iron Cross and the U Boat clasp in bronze. Pfannenscmidt had previously served aboard U-43 and U-48..... see here for more info on U-870 http://www.ubootarchiv.de/ubootwiki/index.php/U_870
Pfannenschmidt was born December 4th 1918, and passed away March 6th 1994.
In the set is his 1957 German Cross in Gold, a St u L piece, made sometime after 1968 as it has an open hinge assembly and is of the later wreath design and painted red ring variety Cross........... it has suffered some damage at some time, being dismantled and glued back together again ! did he drop it ? or was it run over by a vehicle ! the sunburst appears to be distorted and the EK device has even been re applied !.............we will never know what happened !
It also came with a his attendance medal from the 21st International U Bootfahrertreffan (Veterans meeting) held in Fulda 1983 and a veterans U-Boot association stick pin.............sadly I missed out on his award stickpin , I show an image of this piece at the end of the thread, also the seller in Germany it appears had photo albums from Pfannenschmidts estate that were broken up and sold before I saw this set, oh well you cannot win them all, comments please..............
    Prost ! Steve.

Very nice, Steve ...... very nice

Although not the earliest version the history behind it makes it really special. I too saw the auctions but stood back here.

Here´s a pic of the whole group incl. wartime items. And a pic of Pfannenschmidt .... he´s the guy on the left.

Want to add that these pieces come really from the Pfannenschmidt group and that they are absolute honest.

                        Congrats on these great pieces

Thanks for adding those wonderful images Rudiger !
I had not seen the whole group together, is it a dealers image ?
I saw the "piping on board" whistle go from the same source on E-Bay, before I won my items....again a shame they were broken up........
                          Prost ! Steve.

It´s not a dealers image. It´s a pic from another german collector who owned that grouping ago.

Too sad it obviously has been split but that´s sadly common practice now. Good these pieces ended up in your collection

Great stuff Steve, you are on a roll!!!
As Rudiger said, a later DK, but the provenance and history behind it more than make up for that!!!
I guess when a vets grouping is split like this, I am always a little sad, I wish these groupings could be kept together, but I know these days, not everyone could afford, or indeed want all the pieces, and the seller usually makes more selling separate pieces, rather than the group as a whole!
So while its a shame the group has been split, at least you got some of the pieces Steve!! The stickpin was great, and is really the centre piece that held the group together, maybe one day the pieces can all be re-united!!
The DK itself is interesting, as we can only guess as to what happened to it?
Anyway, congratulations Steve, and well done for keeping these pieces together, and keeping the history of the vet alive!!!
