    1957 Luftwaffe PO Badge

    Hi All,

I recently picked up this badge and I would like to submit for opinions and comments. The hinge block is the open type. Also, any idea what caused the markings to the left of the clasp as I have seen on other items as well?

    Thanks

Personally, I believe this badge is one of those late production badges, because the pin is the giveaway, plus the open type hinge block as you stated in the thread, it could also be one of those were produced for the collector's market, because I just don't like the way of how this badge was constructed, I have a few 1957 POB myself, early and late types, and none of them have so many die flaws like yours, not to mention the frosty paint on the back of the eagle looks really odd. Just my 2 cents.

I don't think that this is the latest type of pin that S&L used (with a completely flat head at the hinge). Any thoughts?

I was just having an offline discussion on this a few days ago.

Mian's comments about flaws and paint make me question that though. Can you post the late on that you have Mian?

I concur with you, based on how the pin looks like, this badge is certainly not the latest type of badges produced by S&L, the latest ones should have wider and fully flattened pins. Unfortunately, I don't have those badges with me at this moment, but I just found this badge looked odd solely based on my observation though.

Its a later piece for sure, judging from the well developed flaws on the wings and wing tips.
Still, if you got it at the right price, these P/O do keep looking great .

As Mathijs said, the die flaws are well developed, so a later piece for sure!
The hardware is interesting, as it is a combination of the later thick catch and open hingeblock, coupled with an earlier style pin, its either a transitional piece, or a later one using an older pin!
Still, a nice piece I think!!

As Mathijs and Nigel point out, a nice piece.

                    Hi All,

Thanks for the comments! I thought the piece may stir a little controversy as it does seem to be 70s production with the earlier 60s pin. As has been stated, probably a transitional piece. I picked it up for a fair price so I am OK with it, for what it is. Hopefully, I will acquire a much earlier example at some point that fits in with the '57 LW clasps I am working to collect (need an early '57 bomber clasp too, hint....hint....)
