    S&L 1957 Ek2 Non Mag e-stand

    Hi All,

I have been asked to open a discussion thread on this item. No problemo.
3 Piece non magnetic S&L. Frame on the front is nicely patinised, back looks like there is a silver layer on the flanges.

If anyone wishing to purchase and or want additional pics please let me know.

    Best regards,
    Michel

Well I'll kick it off .... I'm not keen on this particular EK2 .... red flags :

    - non magnetic core ( all my 57er EK2 by St&L have magnetic core )
    - frame ( front looks aged, back looks brand new )
    - core ( seems some one had a go in artificially ageing it )

Can you confirm the EK2 is a 3-piece made one ( 2 separate frames connected to core ) ?
Also, please some close-ups of the cross if possible ( especially the seams ).

    Thanks,
    Mathijs

PS ... I do no wish to call myself an expert on the EK2, so I hope others will chime in as well.

      Hi Mathijs,

Thanks for kicking off. I think I already answered all your questions in my first post:

3 Piece non magnetic S&L. Frame on the front is nicely patinised, back looks like there is a silver layer on the flanges.
I don't understand why S&L makes non mag RK's but not non mag EK's? I will make more pictures later. I know what a three piece ek is and this is one.

About the difference in front and back; It looks like there is a silver layer (paint or silver marker) on the back which is not present at the front. I think it can easily be removed. Shall I try? There is no sign of artificial aging. Also if this cross is a fake (which is not the right term w.r.t. 57 decorations but that is a whole other discussion, call it a copy ) then I keep my finger crossed for a lot of 57 items and iron crosses in particular. But everything is possible.

      Best regards,
      Michel

        Hi!!
        Thanks for posting!!!
First, all EK's made by S&L from the early 70's onwards normally have a non-magnetic core!! If you only collect early pieces you may not be aware of this?
So if this cross has a non-magnetic core, it will be no older that the early 70's!
Michel. can I ask if, in your opinion, the core was painted before or after the cross was assembled?
If theres black paint on the inside of the beading, then its likely to be a much later piece, 80's at least, if not, and theres a clear gap between core and frame, then i'd say its a 70's piece!
The core is definitely S&L, it also has the higher "3" in 1813, that S&L used on some of their earliest EK2 cores, then it disappears, only to reappear again in the early 70's, so that looks good!!
Have'nt checked the frame against my own EK2's yet, i'll do that and let you know!!
Only other thing to be concerned over would be the patina, but as its still quite minty on the reverse, I think if anyone was going to artificially age a piece, surely they would age both sides!!
So, at the moment, I see no problem...S&L piece, if core painted before assembly, then i'd date it to the 1970's!

Nice cross. I have very similar non-mag S&L piece, with the same wet-look on the reverse.

As Nigel has stated 100% S t & L...........as for production date IMO probably late 1070's even early 1980's...still a desirable EK if you collect the entire timeline as I do....I have the same cross in my collection, I think it originally had the very late bead blasted appearance as on Miro's cross , it is still evident on the back...looks like somebody attempted to polish the front ! and removed it, hence the aged look.....core will be painted after construction, notice how the paint has "gathered" in the corner top 3 o'clock arm on the reverse of the cross............
              Prost ! Steve.

Seems I need to eat my words .... being paranoid due to all the fakes out there, seems I judged too fast.

                100% original late 1957 EK2 it is !

                  Hi Mathijs!!
Better safe than sorry, as I said in the other thread about fake S&L EK1's, only the hardware is really letting them down, if they start faking a similar style EK2, it will be hard to spot!!
So, I think we are pretty much all agreed this is a good (later) S&L piece!!!!!!!
Thanks Michel for posting it here and letting us discuss it!
And... thanks to everyone who gave their thoughts on it, and to everyone who had concerns in the first place, I think its much better to discuss a piece and find its good, than to let a fake piece slip thru the net, and end up in someones collection!!!
To all potential buyers............go for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
