    Karl Heinz Gustav Schauenburg

    Obituary:
    Born 1929

Iron Cross holder of outstanding musical gifts who became a Grenadier of the highest quality

Karl Heinz Gustav Schauenburg was almost certainly the most surprising musician ever to have served in the Grenadier band – in Hanoverian times, yes perhaps, but in the twentieth century, hardly.

Born in Holland to German parents he had to return to his native country on the outbreak of war. He was dragooned into the Hitler Youth, as all young men were, and taught trumpet and cello. Late in the war he was awarded the Iron Cross.

He came to England after the war and was earning his living playing in dance bands around London when a friend moonlighting from the Grenadier band thought it would be a lark to persuade himto seek an interview with the Director of Music, Rodney Bashford, who had spent several wartime years as an unwilling guest of the Fuhrer. After the initial shock, however, the wise Director could find no argument against his undoubtedmusical qualities and persuaded the War Office to take him.

Any further objections there might have been quickly dissolved under the force of Schauenburg’s talent, his intense loyalty to his friends, and his wickedly selfdeprecating sense of humour. He would wear the Iron Cross under his apron when mounting guard and flash it mischievously at the inspecting officer; he would try to go to bed if someone mentioned ‘fatigue’; he did not even become a British citizen until 2005, objecting that the shock would kill his father, and had to go in a alien passport queue when on tour. Being a trumpeter, he described his Regimental Adjutant, Sir Hew Hamilton- Dalrymple, as Sir Hew Humphrey Lyttelton and got away with it.

From 1962 to 1984 this outstanding musician gave all to his adopted Regiment. It was Einmal ein Grenadier, immer ein Grenadier!

WERNER VOLKNER won the Iron Cross in the SS; later welcomed into the British Army

Another: Werner Volkner, former Waffen-SS Totenkopf Division; but, he was not allowed to wear his medals.

            2002 article:
...Across one wall of his study are shelves of memorabilia from the Waffen-SS, the Nazi elite of which Mr Volkner was once a member, winning the Iron Cross for bravery under fire. On the other side, are mementoes relating to the Westminster Dragoons, the British Army regiment to which Mr Volkner also once belonged.

...Mr Volkner joined the Waffen-SS in 1942 as an 18-year-old graduate of the Hitler Youth. A quick learner, he took to the military discipline easily and was trained to man a 37mm gun mounted on a half-track vehicle. Despite his youth, his aptitude saw him rise to the rank of SS-Rottenführer, the equivalent of corporal. ...

Mr Volkner spent five years with the Dragoons, serving in Northern Ireland and reaching the rank of corporal. On one occasion he was summoned to the presence of the regiment's honorary colonel, Gen Sir Harold Pyman, who asked him if he would like to wear his decorations won during the war, including his Iron Cross, on parade.

"I said the other lads might not like it, but he said nonsense, that I was entitled and I should make a formal submission and he would OK it," says Mr Volkner. "But it must have ended up in a bin because he died before he could sign it. So I never did get to wear my medals."

...[In his home] Occupying pride of place are the medals he won for his service on the Eastern Front fighting the Russians. There is the general assault badge, the anti-aircraft medal and another recognising that he was wounded.
His favourite, however, is the Iron Cross, second class, awarded for saving the lives of wounded colleagues by evacuating them while under fire near Grodnow in Poland, on July 20, 1944.

Oh .... he has a book out.

On the far right [figuratively as well, too!]

              Thanks Guy.

This is becoming very interesting for me.

I'll have to get the book to see what the other soldiers reaction to him was.

Hope this isn't too far off topic as he served in the Canadian Airforce after the war not the Bundeswehr though he was stationed in Germany.

Thanks for posting the photos of the Admiral !! It looks like he's wearing his original Hilfskreuzer badge with diamonds ! And since he was the only recipient I guess a 57 type was not made ? Also it looks as if his Knights Cross is a second pattern core type. Tom

                                Hi Tom,

Yes, it does look like there is an area there where the swastika is/was. But it was probably sawn off, don't you think? At least the eagle is easy to see.

These images are getting harder and harder to find .... especially after 18 pages or so.

Still, it's fun finding images to post.
