The gentleman you photographed is "Alex" Alexander Uhlig, and a nicer man you could not meet. I spent 2 weeks with Alex and 40 member of the Sturm Regiment veteran's assoc. on Kreta in May 2001. Alex was determined to wear his original wartime RK and was badgered by his kameraden not to as it would draw unwanted publicity to their unit. Alex believed he fought honorable during the war and that history was being rewritten and his original RK was history not revisionism.
My friend George stood next to Alex on May 21, 2001 at the FJ denkmal with the surviving members of he unit while I played "Ich Hatte Einien Kameraden" on the Harmonika and it was one of the most special days of our lives.
I am sorry you didn't have the pleasure of getting to know Alex, I am sure you remember how hot is was that day and how many spectators were there. He knew no English and propably assumed your intentions were not good. I have photos of the day with him if you would like to see them.
