    1957 EK1 Opinions Please.......

    Hi All,

They say every group needs new blood, so here I am! I have collected TR items for a little while, however I now have entered the 1957er domain, please be gentle. I recently purchased this 1957 EK1 for a reasonable price (here comes the Forrest Gump saying...) and I welcome any opinions. The official particulars, as they say in boxing, same dimensions as my 1939 EK1, magnetic core, and appears to be three piece construction. Let the beatings begin.......

P.S. I purchased from a well known and respected dealer in a moment of weakness!

    Hi!!!
Firstly, welcome to the 57 section!!!
Its always great to have new guys getting into the 57ers!!!
Looks like your EK1 is a nice S&L example from around the mid 60's, i guess the hingeblock is solid, not open?
A nice piece to start you off, next maybe a 2nd class to go with it, then a Deumer and then...................... Well. it does get addictive!!!
Thanks for showing, i hope its the first of many, and if you need any info on 57ers, feel free to ask, any of the regulars here will be happy to help, you can also look thru some of the old threads, theres lots to see there too!!!

It looks good, but I would gamble for an open hinge block though ...

          Hi Guys,

First, thank you for the welcome and this appears to be the "fun" group on the site! I apologize for the slightly fuzzy images yesterday (damn margaritas!) so here are two more views. I probably need to stop the lens down a little more next time. I am glad to know this EK1 is original as it was really a blind purchase based upon my faith/past experience with the dealer. It is interesting that the lower arm is slightly aschew in that it is not centered but closer to the left edge. It is not loose and I guess due to less quality control than the TR days. I would like to see an image of a similar piece if anyone has one in their collection. I look forward to learning and expanding my '57 collection. Nigel is right, I am now on the hunt for a similar quality '57 EK2 to complete my '14/'39/'57 collection of EK.

Hi! The pin style is what i call the 3rd type! the earliest S&L's have the coke bottle type, followed by the thinner tapering style, and then this one!
Heres a similar piece of mine..................

Nigel, very nice EK1! I have seen images of the S&L Type 1 with the coke bottle shaped pin so it is interesting to learn of a type #2 and #3. I wonder why so many different pin configurations on the same item in an approximate 10 year period from the same manufacturer? I have ordered a copy of The Iron Time by Previtera so hopefully it will have a section on the '57 EK/RK. Also, any suggestions on a place to find authentic '57 items? Most of the TR dealers I purchase from, rarely have '57 items. Ebay is such a "minefield" for '57 items and TR/Imperial as well I try to stay clear unless I know the seller. One last thing, I never clean any item whether mint, patinated, relic, etc. however on this '57 EK1, I really would like to get rid of the stain on the back. Any suggestions, as water with light scrubbing does not work?

              Best!

                Hi!
I think i'd leave the stain alone, its not really detracting from the piece, and if you've already tried water etc.! If you tried something stronger, it could damage the silver finish, so i just would'nt risk it!!

Sorry, i forgot to answer the other part of your question!!
There are a few dealers, mostly in Germany that do sell 57ers (PM me if you need more info!)
But the best place, certainly for the more experienced collector is E-bay, unfortunately, you have to pick out the gems from amomg the loads of junk, but there are some nice pieces still to be found there, and usually cheaper than dealers prices!!
If you are unsure on a piece, send a link to me, Mike, or any of the regulars here, and i'm sure they would all be happy to help!!
It always worth a look on the E-stand too!!!!!!!!!!
