    Krantz: Orden und Ehrenzeichen

    Hi Guys!!
I was lucky enough to pick up this mint 1958 book, Orden und Ehrenzeichen der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, by Hans-Ulrich Krantz!!!
This book dates from the very start of 57er production, as the actual pieces went on sale, a lot of the 57ers are pictured, some as "artists impressions" some are actual photo's!!
As well as 57ers, other pieces of interest to us, include the Ostvolks, Oaks, TDB's etc etc
I hope to show some of the more interesting stuff, as the actual photograhed pieces hold a few surprises!!!
Heres a couple of pics of the book itself, it comes with a clear sellophane type outer wrapper, which i have removed for these pics. The book measures approx 250mm X 175mm, and has 260 pages, including several pages of maker and retailers adverts at the back!!

As a little starter, have a look at the pics for the RK!!!!!!
While the EK1 and RK pics on the left are drawings, the two RK pics with Oaks, and Oaks & Swords on the right hand page are actual photos!
Note that both the drawing, and the lower of the the two RK pics show the 2nd pattern core.............and this is 1958

My copy of the same book

Hi Nigel, Thanks for posting these pic's from the book. I purchased a copy of this book in the 1980's and I've wondered about the RK photos myself. I can't understand how both pattern cores could date to 1958 either, but they do !!IMO is that since they both date from the same time period, the first pattern core was used first at random and when the dies were worn out they started using the second pattern core ? Hell....I'm confused....Got more thinking to do ! Tom

Yes tom, its a strange one, why have two different cores from the start?
Even the earliest 2nd pattern i've seen does'nt seem to have the same top quality as the early 1st patterns, so most of the them should be later than the 1st pattern as we always thought, but as there is a photo in this book, at least one RK with a 2nd pattern core must have been made in the 50's??
I was aware of this some time ago, but wanted to have the book myself to be sure!!!!!!!!!
          -Nigel

That is an interesting book, i too have that one in my collection.

            To the RK with 2nd pattern core....there are S&L B-frame RK´s out with 2nd pattern core !!

I have seen pics from 2 different pieces but don´t remember where.

The one on the pic with oaks and swords could well be a B-frame as i can´t see a dipping ring.

Some pics of the Heer badges, some appear to be artists impression, some are actual photo's, the actual medals & badges should have all been produced when this book was first published, and its interesting to see the pins (where shown) on some of the badges, even if they are only illustrations rather than photgraphs!!
Please feel free to comment on anything you think is of interest, the design, maker etc..........

Hm, really interesting question, indeed. Maybe two patterns were in offer from beginning for veterans to choose. 57ers are unofficial awards, so why not, market could be absolutely customer oriented... No wonder nearly everybody had chosen first pattern core, because it is undoubtely nicer. So the dies of this core went off sooner and then, in 70s only second pattern left in offer. That explains why we think first pattern is early and second is later. I know, it´s only theory, but do you have better?
                              Regards, Miro
