Souval's Blank Core EK's Reference Thread

    Hi Guys!
In this thread, i'm going to try and explain a little about the blank core EK's that were made by Rudolf Souval in the 1950's/60's!
It will be quite a lengthy thread, as the EK's went through many changes, mainly in the hardware, as years went by. There appears to be a strong link between Souval and S&L, as will become evident.
As i'm sure we all know, Souval was a shrewd businessman, and was always on the lookout for opportunities to sell pieces, the most well known probably being the huge range of Third Reich copies!!
Souval saw a chance to make and sell EK's without a swastika to Austrian veterans, which could then be worn at re-unions etc. Its not known exactly when the first blank core EK's appeared, looking at the hardware, construction, finish etc. i would guess mid 1950's, certainly several years before the 57ers!!!
The majority of these EK's used Souval's own wartime frame style, either wartime leftovers, or new pieces struck from the original dies, as the same die flaws found on wartimers are still on these postwar pieces.
    EK1..................
This first cross is a typical example of an early piece, the frames were glued to the backplates, using old animal glue, soldered pieces only appeared later!

Cores were usually non-magnetic on EK1's, but some magnetic ones exist, the paint used on the core was usually matt, with a textured finish, frames nicely burnished to give a shiney finish as well as the die flaw, the frames also show other typical Souval features, such as the rounded inner corners, and the "claw" bead in the outside corners!!

The hardware on this cross is also typical of the earliest pieces.
The catch is the one used by Souval on many postwar pieces, and is i think unique to them! It is made of a circle of metal, with a central section cut, and bent back on itself to form the catch. The hingeblock also looks like one of the types used by Souval on wartime EK's, and has a very low block part.
The pin used on these earlier pieces looks identical to the ones used by S&L on early postwar pieces, such as sports badges, and later on their first 57 Ek's, it even has the same tool mark or scrape at the hinge end, the only difference, is that Souval's pins in this "coke bottle" style are magnetic, whereas S&L are'nt!!

While the frame style remained the same for several years, the hardware was constantly changing, more parts from S&L were used and slowly replaced a lot of the original Souval style parts!
In this next cross, the pin and hingeblock remain the same, but it has a thin flatwire catch, identical to the one S&L used on their early 57ers....

There are several "mix and match" parts EK's from this period, 1958-60!!
Different combinations of Souval and S&L hardware parts can be found.
On this next example, the same Souval "low" hingeblock is used, alongside Souval's own catch, but this one has a different pin, rarely found on S&L pieces, but it has been seen on a few......

The next big change came with the switch to the S&L hingeblock, much taller than the Souval, and well known as the standard hingeblock on the earlier S&L pieces, and used by them for around ten years!!!
This next cross, links nicely from the last one, as it retains the "rare" style of S&L pin, but now we have not only an S&L style flatwire catch, but for the first time, the S&L hingeblock!
Note the pin on this one is marked L/58 for Souval, otherwise you could be looking at the reverse of an S&L EK.......

And so to the last major variant i know of.
During all the years we have gone through, somewhere from the mid 50's to the early 60's, the hardware has changed but the frame has remained the same.....until now!!
This cross is an example of what i think was one of the last of the blank core Souvals, the Souval wartime frame has now been replaced by a standard S&L one, these are the hardest type to find, so i dont think many were made?
                028.jpg
The reverse is again all S&L parts, tapering pin, solid hingeblock & thin flatwire catch, the pin on this one is also MM'd L/58.....
