KC to Flak Hauptmann Heinz-Arthur Berger ...

    Hi guys,

Told you I was saving up for another RK buy ... just not this one.
But I saw it flying by on a dealer site and could not resist myself ... I just had to have it.
Priced a bit on the high side, but it said " Named RK, name will be provided to buyer ".
So I took a chance and pushed " Buy Me " button ... and have to say, I don't regret it for one minute.

This lovely S&L 2nd pattern did belong to Hr. Heinz Arthur Berger, who was awarded the RK as Oberleutnant with 2. Batterie Flak-Rgt 411 (mot.).

His bio can be found here :

    http://www.ww2awards.com/person/28374 and http://www.ritterkreuztraeger-1939-4...rger-Heinz.htm

The RK itself is a fantastic 2nd pattern S&L ... magnetic core and frame stamped "800".
You can clearly see it has been well worn, with the ribbon especially modified for this.

This one will surely deserve its place amongst my collection ... a matching 57er case is being brought over from the States ...

But I'll let the pictures to the talking now ... enjoy.

    B.Regards
    Mathijs

Some more shots to follow here ... front side of the core shows some signs of corrosion, but in my opinion it only adds to the strong character of this piece ...

                    WOW Great RK Mathijs!!!!
I thought the days of you buying 2nd patterns were gone
But seriously, i can see why you bought this one!!!!
Firstly, its well made and finished, and also has a great "look" to it, it has obviosly been worn!!
And secondly, its attributed, that always makes any piece extra special!!!
Well done on a great buy!!!!!!!!!

Hi Nigel, although I prefer the 1st patterns, I'm having a hard time resisting the 2nd pattern crosses these days .... .

I can see my bank account draining .

                        Congrats on your next RK

But is there anything that proves that this cross was actually his?
I read so often that something is attributed, but I rarely see anything like pictures, documents or personal items that could back it up.
A story is easily made up and will be as long as there are people that are willing extra money for it.

It is very interesting to see that the core was corroded before they painted it.
So it seems that S&L had stored parts/items for a long time (or very humid environment) before they used them.

I share your concern, Luud. However, this one came from Philipp Claus, from whom I have bought quite some 57ers in the past.
They have offered other RK's ( named / unnamed ) at different prices.
I have no reason to distrust them, but had already requested additional info on the history of this piece ( for my personal records ).

But you do raise a good question there ... I recently purchased another cased RK off eBay :

                          http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Seller says its a named piece, but on this one have my doubts. I actually purchased it for other reasons .

Trust is a something I lost the hard way, if money is involved people do strange things..
Even if the seller is honest, it doesn't mean the person who sold it to the dealer was!

That is a modern RK, all is possible but why would a vet (or anyone) buy such a modern piece?

He also sold some more questionable items that he attributed to a RKT.
The ugliest items was a minimedal bar with different lenght of ribbons and ribbons from different era.....IMO that bar is a big put together.

Hi Luud, point well taken .... but it was an impulse buy and I'm pleased with it, that's the most important thing for me.

As to the eBay buy, I gambled on it, as I thought to recognize the flawed S&L "B" frame with repainted 2nd pattern copper plated core.
Maybe it is, maybe its not ... will judge once in hand ... if not, I can always sell the RK again and keep the case .

But I agree that most of his stuff was either modern made or put together ... like you say, some people will do about anything for cash ...
