    Makers Mark Question

    Hello Friends,

It has been some time since I have been involved with my 57er collection. There are several pieces in my collection which have a "O" mark on them. See photos below.

Please remind me as to what this mark means.

Thank you all again for your well wishes for my wife, she sends her thanks!

    My best,
    Vince

Hi Vince, there are roughly some views on these "o" marks ...

    1. Its considered as typical mark found on earlier items produced by S&L
    2. Others believe, and its plausible, that its a position mark for attaching pin & hinge ...
    3. Others then believe its a mark made when the badge was taken from the mould ...

      Hi Vince!!
As Mathijs has said, there are a few different opinions on what the "0" mark is for, but as far as i know, it only appears on S & L pieces before about 1970, so even if it is'nt a makers mark, it can be used as such!!!

        Hi Vince,

all has been said about that mark except that this mark can only be found on "good" 57ers which are accepted by the collectors. On crappy "fakes" this mark hasn´t been found till now.
So it´s always a good sign

In my opinion (and not just mine) it means, "this is the bottom," which is slightly different from a location marker for the catch, but serves just about the same purpose. It tell the assembler in which direction to orient the pin, hinge, and catch.
          Best regards,
