Denazified awards question

I have a couple of badges that have had the swastika removed, can someone tell me why this was done and when?

I know there was a political denazification process to stop people remaining nazi but was this linked to awards?
My guess would be that soldiers serving in the post war german army had the swastikas removed from their awards so they could still wear them, is this right?

The 1957 pattern award would suggest that they were simply issued with new awards.

The swastika was banned post-war, so the veterans removed them in order to keep thier awards. The 1957 awards were state santioned de-nazified awards that were availible private purchase.
