Skyrocketing 57 Prices (well, on this dealers site anyway)

    Hello

Most of us on here buy items because we like them, want them and must have them!! If it's a piece that we are really, really after we might even, very occasionally pay over the odds for it. But that's ok, because most of us are collectors building a collection and being happy being a temporary custodian of a little piece of history. So if on the odd item we pay a little over the odds it doesn't matter, because we're not in it make money.

But how far over the odds would you go? Well check out this dealers site and his 'Whats New' section. He's listing 57 versions of the RK, DKiG, Gold WB and an Austrian trifold mounted EK2. So far so good. Now check out the prices. Is it me, or are a couple or so of the items just ever so slightly overpriced? And as for some of the descriptions...........

    Or is just me?

    Regards
    David

      That's indeed over the top.

Unfortunately you're right David. There are some dealers that know there is interest in 57 awards and they just adapt their prices to this demand. Actually we should close the 57 forum to lower the prices.

      Best regards

Unfortunately dealers have learned the value of the 57ers ... Asking 150 € for EK1, 100 Euro for EK2 and insanely amounts for DK's and RK's.
Prices of 400 to 750 Euro for an early DK and 800+ for nice RK ...

If the items offered are nice and early pieces, no problem to pay premium ( if you really want it, you will buy it ).
However .... some of these guys are selling modern crap for high $$$$$ , eBay well ahead of everyone.

Actually, this evolution in price is not so strange. Its simple economics. When demand of a certain commodity rises, while the offer of this commodity remains the same or even declines, the result of the market will be that prices will rise ... .

We have become the victims of our own succes when it comes to collecting 57ers, I'm afraid.

Looking at the future, I fear prices will continue to increase, especially for higher end items .
Especially if we, collectors, keep feeding the system with our demands .

Very well stated David. These are my sentiments on the matter exactly. I have to admit that I have "paid the jackpot" on several MUST HAVE pieces and would do it again to obtain some of the rarities now in my collection.

I personally look at my collection as a memorial or tribute to the brave and innovative Deutschen FJ of WWII and you can't put a price on that.

Also well stated Mathijs! Good old SUPPLY AND DEMAND laws are in full effect! The pace of the increase will only continue that is until a certain author completes and releases a long awaited volume on the subject and then the pace will accelerate at a much increased rate as the masses will have a laymen's guide to use to collect the better pieces and weed out the less collectibles and fakes. This is an interesting phenomenon to be sure and our little band of brothers is in on the "ground floor."

BTW-I just looked at Jamie's site (6:47pm EST) and the pieces are still listed. Apparently the internet is down at the asylum as the crazies haven't snatched up these bargains!

Yeah, ~$1300 USD for a 57 Dk is insane (to add to Mike's nut house reference) ! Just glad I got into most of my collection before prices got to this level.
