I can say with assurance that everyone who participates in this section of the forum would call this typical S&L production ON THE BACKSIDE. The hardware is very typical S&L and the piece even has the S&L "O" just under and to the right of the catch.

I will let others comment as to the manufacturer of the EKI to the front of the piece.

Not sure on the core, but the frame looks to be S & L, and the pin, hinge etc. are typical S & L hardware from the 50's or early 60's!!

It does look like original 57 early hardware. But, why would they make an award like this, since the only recipient died in 1934 (Hindenburg)?

I'd agree, an S&L piece.

Why were these made? Quite simply as copies for collectors. As has been stated only one was awarded so there is no chance of ever owning an original, although I believe a small number of museum copies were made in and around the actual period - and don't quote me on this as I'm not 100% certain, but I have it in mind that Godet made the original award piece as well as the period, quality museum copies. So, because there is virtually no chance of ever owning an original period piece, companies like S&L made copies for collectors. This isn't a 57 piece per se, simply a 'for the collector' (or even re-enactment specialist) item.

... Would be interesting to see some nice pictures of the Godet's star, I haven't seen it yet.
... here is an other one I have, it's star made by Rothe, very good quality, much better then S&L.
