Hi Luud, the EK2's fine, i've seen worse paint than that!!
Looking again at the EK1, i think the area i've outlined looks to be the original paint, matt finish, like most early crosses, but like you said the "repaint" if thats what it is, is done in a glossier black, maybe the repaint was done a while after the original date of manufacture -Nigel4.jpg

Here's an idea. The repaint could've been to cover a rusty core that was stripped, and then repainted. I do own an EKII on a medal bar that's had some rust develop on the core, and I can only guess it was due to poor storage...like in a damp basement, or something like that.

Some very nice albeit mysteriously painted crosses Luud/

The cross in post #8 is really special!

Because I am still thinking it has been painted before it left S&L, I have been looking for S&L new form items with the same paint.

Today I found this EK2 (not mine), wich makes me think that George could be right with his thought that they could have been touched up due to bad storage.

I checked my own collection for early S&L's with a similar paint.
And I did found this DK!

Interesting to see that Luud, the EK2 you showed looks to be an early one, but it certainly has been repainted, your theory makes sense, and could well be right!! -Nigel
