    EK pair opinions needed

This pair of EK's came in a larger group.
I have no idea how S&L finished their crosses postwar.

Could this paint job have been done before it left the factory?
    All opinions are appreciated.

Hi Luud, i see no problem with the EK2, its paint finish is similar to one i posted recently! But the EK1 looks like its been painted after assembly, there is a lot of black paint on the beading. This means its either a later piece of fairly modern production, or its had a repainted core!! Could you show us a photo of the reverse, should help in dating it!! -Nigel

                    Hello Luud

As Nigel says, nothing wrong with the EKs. The EK2 is as you would expect it, and the EK1 looks like it has had paint applied after assembly, something normally associated with much later, more modern pieces. Looking at the paint run under the '1939' I'd venture, (without having the benefit of having seen the reverse hardware and side view of the hinge block), that it's been repainted at some stage.

                    Regards
                    David

                      Thanks guys.

I didn't make pictures of the back because I stopped using the setup to determine the period.
But I have cut the EK1 from an overview. It is IMO an early EK1 from the end of the 50's or beginning of the 60's.

The rest of the group are transitional made (or simultaniously) between the round pins and the newer needles, but still the solid hinge and small catch.

On the EK1 you can see a small piece of paint chipped of at the 9 o'clock arm and shows the first layer of paint.
It just doesn't make sence that someone would have repainted the cross, it is almost in unworn condition
Or could it have been touched up due to some damage, like the damage onther the 1939?

Hi Luud, thanks for the reverse view, it is, as you said an early cross, from the 50's or very early 60's! They always painted the core before assembly at this time, so like David said, a repaint seems the only explanation, but i dont know why, the cores usually keep their paint very well!
I've never seen an early cross repainted before..... strange!!
Has anyone else any idea's??? -Nigel

                          Hello

Given the description and photo of the rear of this EK1, a repaint is the only answer. As Nigel and myself have pointed out, painting the cores after assembly is something normally seen on much later pieces. Although a long shot, there is another possibility outside that of the original owner or a collector repainting it, and that is that it was repainted at the factory after being assembled because of flaw on the original paint job, or something akin to that. Instead of binning it, it was 'resurected' with a lick of paint over the original surface. This would at least explain the otherwise unworn appearance of it.

                          Regards
                          David

That is what I also thought.
Normally I would have judged it as repainted, but I have seen more oddities from postwar S&L's.
I have some of these oddities that I will post soon, and I remember for example the golden CCC from Mike also.

This is what I do know.
The seller told me (doesn't mean it is the truth) that he bought the group it in the sixtires from the vet and kept in untouched uptil now.
The rest of the items are in unmessed and uncleaned condition.
The paint has been sloppy applied, is more glossy than normal on S&L's, but doesn't look modern to me.

I did find a better picture of the EK1 in my files.
Probably will never know what happend to it.

The paint job on the ek2 is about the worst I have ever seen.
It looks like the landscape of the moon :laugh
