Early BWB Comparison

Here are two early Wound Badges with different hardware setups. I thought perhaps it would be good for us to discuss who the makers are and time frame of production.

The badge with the paint chips and flat pin is 46mm X 37mm @ 10.40 grams and the other is 45mm X 37mm @ 12.72 grams.

Note the significant differences on the wreaths and sword hilts and grips.

Any input or thoughts on these two pieces?

Hi Mike,

I posted this a short time ago and have not heard from anyone. What are your thoughts on this BWB? I have not seen a pin set up like this before. This badge also lacks details in a major way! Everything from the liner bolt, the wreath, the swords too all lack good details.

Here is one of my early BWB for comparison to your two posted. It looks just like the one you have on the right....yes? The details are not as sharp as the badge on the left. Especially seen on the sword hilts!

Hi Mike ... the one on the left has setup I've seen on WW1 BWB. However the medal itself is WW2 model. Interesting ...
Perhaps the left one is WW2 left-over stock without the swaz ? It would explain for the small differences.

I saw that one Vince and really don't know what to make of it. You're right. The detail is poor and I've never seen a 57er BWB that wasn't stamped. The pin looks odd too. Unlike any setup I've seen. It looks like it's glued on. Is that right?

Your second badge is the same as the one on the right in my posting. S&L I believe.

I believe I've seen that setup on both WWI and WWII badges, but I'd have to do some looking to find the examples. This is the only 57er I've seen like this.

Mike, it looks like you have a Wilhelm Deumer and a Steinhauer & Lück there. Two fine badges that would look good in any collection.

Vince, the first thought from me would be that it is a creation from an obscure individual manufacturing all sorts of counterfeits and non period pieces. We have all seen the junk they create.

That needle however is nothing such a source would use in my opinion. Your badge might very well be from the period and from a small size manufacturer. Perhaps located in Austria?
