This sounds akin to the Souval frames that show up on the WW2 EKs but with other companies cores and, or hardware on the reverse. Plenty of precedent for it.
As I said before, a very interesting piece.

I only know maker marked L/58 EK II's with these kind of frame.
There are L/58 marked EK I's with distinctive "57" hinge and pin system, too.

I suspect this was made between 1945 and 1957 sometime. During this time it was forbidden to wear the swastika, of course, and a replacement design had yet to be accepted. But I've just finished reading this book (which I don't really recommend) in which the author relates how determined some soldiers were to wear their awards after the war for formal occasions and the like. Most people obeyed the statutes put in place by the occupying powers and did not wear any awards, at any time. But those inclined to test the limits of tolerance who did not wish to wear unattractive, defaced Iron Crosses could have formed a small market for awards like the one shown in this thread. I wonder if this piece could have been manufactured in small quantities for them?
This is just speculation on my part... does anyone know for sure what these were intended for?Best regards,

I like the cross Nigel. I saw it on eBay just a week or two ago and almost bid on it. Not quite in my wheel house though. Definitely in yours though!
As David mentioned it is in the Austrian tradition as they had little to no affinity for the Nazi's and their swastikas.
Have you added this one to your fine and growing stable of EK's???Last edited by mbizy; 06-25-2009, 05:23 PM.
