FYI: Last week Frau Kutscher told me (via e-mail) that they still sell the cases for the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross, but S&L doesn't produce them.

        Best regards

        Nils

Well guy's I have told Rolf to not bother & to forget the whole idea of going there. When they told him that they don't "make" awards any more, in the next breath they said they still have them? Now the cases thing ? The hell with proceeding any further. Tom

How sad ..... but predictable :
To me it seems S&L got cold feet now . One person - one call - ... fine they might come to the door and let you in .
Keep in mind how many people( members, other forums and the public - including S&L staff ) that read through this post .... some have the same idea now --- who gets there first might get something !
I would not be at all surprized .... that the phone has been ringing a lot more than usual in the past 2 weeks .
This made them think twice now and backing away changing their minds ... as not to have "crowds' suddenly at their door for the one or two pieces they may have .

Exactly what I was thinking Douglas!!
I think too many enquiries in a short time! S&L always seem cautious when dealing with people interested in 57ers!
They may think there's some conspiracy going on, and are taking no chances!!
I still believe they certainly have some 57ers to sell, wether they are still making them, or simply still selling old stock I don't know!!

Yes Nigel, It's pretty obvious that the future of S&L is not dependent on the sale "Sand blasted framed RK's" HAHA. Even in 1988 when I showed up un announced I almost had to "Beg" to be let in. Tom

                  Agreed Tom!!
But S&L probably underestimate the demand for these pieces, I think there is still a market for them, especially if they upped the quality somewhat??
What is S&L's main production these days? Is it the usual sports medals/ badges and corporate stuff???

I was under the impression that they produced decorations for the Bundeswehr as well.

I Nigel, If you go to their website, they use to show everything they had for sale. I remember seeing all kinds of things that were non-military related. I'll try it and see. As far as Bundeswehr items, I don't remember seeing any of those listed ? Tom

So, just to add something about my own experience: I emailed back in early February and got a reply from Hanelore, too. It was almost exactly like the one posted below. Basically: not a chance of dong business. What a drag! I might go to the factory like Tom did. That showroom must have been amazing!

Hi Jeff, Keep in mind my only visit was in 1988. I have no idea what you would find today on a visit ? My travel days are long over, but if I ever did return to Germany I would pay them another visit. Tom

I don`t know the size of S&L but if there todays core bussiness is the "mass-production" of award-like items it would be not too uncommon that they don`t sell single pieces to a single person... normally companies like this only sell to resellers or to other companies. That my also be the cause for not advertising Bundeswehr awards as they may sell them only to the German Government itself.

...and as already stated: Everything connected with WW II is quite sticky in todays Germany. Even every post war state organization (Including the government, state police and the Bundeswehr) is x -rayed wheather "old nazies" had influence in it during the 50ies to 70ies. So even the 57er awards might be too sticky for some people today so that a company intersted in bussyness with the German state might pull out of this field ...
