Hello
I have to say that I agree with both Uwe and Peter. Peter makes an excellent point in that his S&L produced WW1 EK1 is a replacement piece made for veterans and, it has to be said, collectors as anyone could buy these. However, as Peter says, because he knows what it is and when it was made, it presents no problems and is part of the history and manufacture of these awards.
Uwe is also correct when he says that the only items that should be given the title 57 re-issue are those which are referred to in the 1957 law, which are those that required re-making due to the appearance of a swastika on the originals. Therefore the post WW2 PLMs, like their post WW1 counterparts are again replacement pieces for veterans as well as supplying the market for collectors. The same, I believe, is true of the 57 re-issue pieces, in that anyone could buy them. The only exception was that WW2 veterans serving in the Bundswehr had to produce evidence of their entitlement to a 57 re-issue award before being able to wear it on their uniform.
Provided an item is accurately described, e.g. replacement, (official or re-issue), reproduction, replica etc then it is up to the collector as to what they buy. To me, and this is only my opinion, a fake is an item trying to be something that it never was, e.g. a post WW2 swastika'd knightscross being sold as an original award piece, (there are only two types of knightcross after WW2. The 57 re-issue version and reproduction / replicas of the WW2 ones with swastika. We are know even seeing reproduction / fake 57 pieces as well !!).
Anyway, just my opinion and thoughts on the subject.
Regards
David

Thanks Peter,
I asked because I have a TR era S&L 1914 EKI with the pin marked both 4 and L/16.
If my memory serves me right it matches yours on the front while having wartime instead of '57 type fittings on the reverse. My 4 and L/16 double marked example matches the EKI on a S&L display copy of the 1914 Hindenburgstern that I have.
Interesting thread.
