    Pin - Alaskan Command

My wife picked up a pin that I'm having a hard time puzzling out. Obviously, it has many of the characteristics of the run of the mill Alaskan Air Command crest. Oddly (to me) there seem to be on crest configured with the predominant 'star' being upright as expected and another crest with the star inverted (upside down).

My wife's pin has this inverted star as well as a black versus blue airforce shield. Also, to the left of the Big Dipper is a gold circle (not a star) which I've found no examples of thus far poking around on the web.

Needless to say I know nothing of Airforce insignia. Can anyone suggest what these nuances to the Alaskan Air Command crest represent?

Had no idea our military paid for insignia with extra features added and minor things like the color of the crest being wrong. I suppose that's how we end up with the f-35 that can't win a dogfight with a WW2 Mustang or Bf-109
