Patching infantry sidecap

Hello,
I put this airborne patch to an original infantry OS cap for airborne troops reenacting purpuses.
Is it historically accuratte? I was told chocolate brown was more officer's ranks and rare to be seen on enlisted headgear.

It is true that this material is more often seen on officers hats, however, higher ranking NCO's would also pay the higher price for them.
