These aren't Civil war era photos, but Civil War subjects. I unfortunately don't own the originals; other family members do.

and here are a rough bunch of boys. The question though is are they Kansas Red Legs or Missouri Ruffians? Outlaw Josey Wales anyone? I love the 1853 Slant Breech Sharps carbines! Beechers Bibles for those who are unfamiliar with them. Below them is a southern sympathiser with the sessecion ribbon.

Outstanding images! Please keep them coming. Is that a Brady print CDV of Brownell?

Here are a couple more to add; a cavalry bugler ninth plate ambrotype, and a sixth plate dag of a young lady I think would be pretty in any era.

I guess this is the right thread. Here is my lady ambro image. There were few smiles during the Civil War era. The woman had to farm and tend the family while there husband was off to war. Not only that, but back then there was no furnace, air conditioning, running water, flushing toilets, cell phones, day care, and on. My wife would have committed suicide.

I love these images, and have always wanted to add a few to my US collection. My Father collected old west photographs when I was a kid...in fact, his hobby is what got me in to collecting at a young age. There is something very striking about these early photos.

Is there a 'CW images 101" posted somewhere? Are there any dealers that specialize in them?

There's good info and lots of photos to look at on the LOC "Selected Civil War Photographs" site http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/cwphtml/cwphome.html which has a good bibliography page with references.


Not necessarily recommending one dealer over another, but I've had good dealings with -

But I actually have gotten most of the few images I have from antique stores/flea markets/stray images from other websites/ebay.

Reviving this thread - I branched off into looking for images of people with dogs (just got bored).

This one is a ninth plate size tintype; early-mid 1860s judging from his tie.

Couple of later ones (1870s), both are quarter plate size, and the one of the little boy is in a really nice quarter plate case (though the case was probably made previously, and someone stuck the tintype in it later).
