This is the same case as Steve's in post #10, which makes that Confederate image even better!

I guess beauty would really have to be in the eye of the beholder for this lady, but I'm partial to daguerreotypes! This image is ID'd as Sarah Jane Stewart, aged 24 when the image was taken in 1855. Unfortunately the old label doesn't say where she was from. Sixth plate in a leatherette case.

Wonderful find Greg. You never know what pops up! And we were just discussing this thread and case!

I don't know how many of these cases headed south from NYC, but I am guessing about a 1:7 ratio. What makes the image my favorite is the northern made, rare octagonal case with a confederate soldier who is a cavalryman. Does not get much better than that.

Here is an image that was with our family pictures as I grew up. My dad had no idea who she was -- he was youngest of 11 kids and his dad died in 1934 with his mom dying in 1957. No siblings (or anybody else) were around to ID this picture. Through comparison to photos and investigative work followed by contacting family name forums and a little deducton I believe with about 99% certainty that this is my GGrandmother Sarah Ann on her wedding day in 1863. Her father John I. Scoby was in a cavalry battle when a bullet went through his horses ears as well as his hand.

Another one I have -- I don't know what you call this type -- backpainted on glass. By chance I happened to find a printed local history of the 104th Ohio volunteer infantry and Reilly is mentioned a lot. He left the civil war as a General so this image must be before that.

I live near Amish country, and these Civil War women have the same looks on their faces as the Amish women I see. They look tired, brow beat, and depressed. Show me a Civil War pic of a woman with a big smile on her face and I'll say you really have something. Ammersee
