Great images! I only have a couple more unsmiling ladies to show.

This one is a ninth plate "ruby" ambrotype, 1860s.

Sixth plate ambrotype in a leatherette case. This would have been one of my favorite civilian images, except for the damage.

Greg, beautiful images! You could start one of those calendars "Women of the Antebellum" or something like that. Neat! Mike.

I am a teacher and early to mid 90s this kid came into my room and pulled out a tintype and said "Sombody told me you know about these." This kid comes from the poor side of the tracks and out of his dirty bluejeans comes a really nice confederate tintype case from New Orleans with the constitution and other images on the case. This kid's ancestor was one of the Cherokees living in the "territories" who volunteered for the South. The image shows a Cherokee in a confederate uniform with a beaded chest sash, a headband, a large pistol and bowie knife. Of course I asked him if he wanted to sell it or keep it and he said he wanted to keep it. Later (when I actually got around to using a computer) I found his ancestor listed in the Dawes Rolls showing he was a survivor of the Trail of Tears. I told this story to a dealer I know and he about almost beat me to tell him the kid's name. But the kid wants to keep it so I kept his name private. Recently I have asked him if I could photograph the image with a digital camera but he doesn't seem too interested. If I get him to consent I'll post it on here.

I hope you get the chance to do a photo - that would be a fantastic image to see!

              Best,
              Greg

Mike, that's really a unique image! Thanks for showing!

                  Very nice, keep them coming!

Steve - is the unit known for that image?
Unfortunately Greg it is not. I had hoped the hat pin might unlock the mystery but it is gold highlighted like the buttons and obscured the shape of it. It reminded me of the Mosby crew and at any rate, it is a great Rebel image in a spectacular gutta percha 'Chessplayers' case.

This is a great thread by the way. Steve

                    Hi,

Well if 869 Broadway is now E 18th Street, then 867 Broadway must be E 18th Street too right? I'll look it up.

Just next door which is now Paragon Sporting Goods Company if I'm going in the right direction. The buildings all look the period.

                        867 Broadway

                        Hey,

Thanks for looking up the address for me. That's interesting that the building is still there and being used. Now ity's corporate headquarters for a sporting goods company. Very interesting.

BTW, he is holding a P1853 Enfield. You can tell by the rear sight and the little things around the lockplate screws.

Got this one at a flea market yesterday. Just a common ambrotype, with the image fading quite a bit ...
