Campaign Stars on the WWII Victory Ribbon

This is a question that has perplexed me for a long time and one that I think everybody in the world knows the answer to except for me. It is quite common to see a ribbon group coming out of the Pacific Theater with a campaign star affixed to the WWII Victory ribbon. Why does this occur?
I once had a naval veteran tell me that he thought it was for weathering the typhoon that wreaked havoc on the US fleet after the war, but I have no documentation etc.
It is just too common an occurance for it to be an individual adornment.

Many times have asked the same question. I have yet to hear an answer. Every time I ask all I get in reply is "You know, I always wondered that too."

If you find out, PLEASE let me know too!!

A star on the WW2 Victory ribbon denoted combat service. I had always wondered that also and when I got married I inherited my Father in laws jacket with on on it. That is the response he gave me when questioned and said that thats the way it came issued to them. Hope that helps.
