Aloha All,
Like to share my first WWI US M1917 Helmet. The 91st Division insignia is painted dark green (or black) with no 91st in the middle. There's two initials “AW” on both sides of the leather strap on the top of the interior pad. Under the brim has the manufacturer heat stamp “XHE” which is stamped on both front and back. The one stamped near the rear seam has the X stamped sideways. I also picked up a book titled “600 Days Service, History of the 361 Infantry Regiment of The United States Army”. I've been looking for a nice US WWI helmet (to bookend my M16 German helmet) and was lucky to find both on Stewart's Military Antiques.
Is there any information on XHE helmets and how many were produced during WWI?
Was division insignias painted on the front of the helmets during the war or post-WWI?
Is the asbestos in the pad safe as long as left alone? I've read about it and would like to be 100% sure!
Mahalo and Stay Safe….
