North Korean Orders of National Flag

Glad to see a book out about North Korean Orders. It is not easy trying to find out about orders from North Korea.

I have a question about the Orders of National Flag No. 1 & 2, which I have in the version with the horizontal pin. The ONF #1 weighs 62.4 grams and has a serial number in the high 3,000 range. The ONF#2 weighs about 43 grams and has a serial number in the high 10,000 range. Can anyone give an approximate date for these? What kind of metal are they made from? What does the author indicate for rarity? I might be able to get pictures posted.

    Fun to learn.

Hello all - I am posting these pictures for Larry from the question he is asking...

Larry - You are asking a good question and I am just learning more about these badges and medals and am going through the book now to learn more. So it may take me a few and if another member is more knowledgeable can jump in it will be appreciative...thanks.

                Orders of National Flag

                No problem, Ralph.

I have looked foward to this forum for a long time. To the best of my (limited) knowledge, these orders would date from the late 50's or early 60's. There seem to be more older ONF #3's available than 1&2's. I've got one of the Soviet made #3's.

In addition to rarity, other things I'd like to know are where the ONF's I have were made and what type of metal they are made from--silver, pot metal of some sort, etc. Am most interested in hearing what you come up with...

                Larry

Larry - Go through the pages from the recently published NK book by Sessler and McDaniel I found that the first, second and third class medal was established October 1948.

The rarity of ONF #1: Listed in the book as a Type 3 with serial numbers that ranged from 3835 through 8345. Rarity number is R3.

The rarity of ONF#2: Listed in the book as a Type 4 with serial numbers ranging from 7594 through 11,997. Rarity number is R3

At this time I am not able to assist you with any specific dates for your medals.

What does R3 translate to on their rarity scale?

R3 = A rare peice that can be sometimes found, but maybe hard to find.
