Yes an original WW2 last ditch/civilian defense helmet. These were made in large quantities & are extremely common

Great film. Looks like he's wearing a civilian uniform and the navy did have quite a few civilian employees there, so maybe he was with them. It would explain why he has the navy issued grenade.
