I had posted this in the wrong forum. I ashamed to say I found this tucked very far away and don’t remember the story on getting it. I’m guessing an IJN aviation cadet? I have the jacket and trousers, matching from a vet. ANY info appreciated.

Yes, that's what it is. I haven't seen one with rank insignia & that makes me a bit suspicious

Jareth, I know you know your stuff and I’d go with what you say, and my question is, are you sure it shouldn’t have the rank insignia? If not I’ll likely remove it. Thanks again.

No doubt it's a nice original & named/issued. I'd always thought as cadets they had no rank till graduation? I may be wrong. That's why rank throws me off. Lets see what other say.

I don't see them with PO insignia often. They're mostly seen with enlisted insignia. Nonetheless, it seems to be fine.

This is why period photos are so important! Great photo I've never seen! Proof tunic is correct!

I cannot read the volunteer/draft/reserve status and branch kanji, and one of the sailor's ID number. If you don't know what I'm talking about, see Nick Komiya's most excellent post "How To Interpret the personal ID numbers used by the Japanese Imperial Navy."

Thank you all for the wealth of information and especially that period photograph. An interesting note, my 9 year old, 80 pound boy can wear this jacket neatly. The arms a bit too long, but otherwise it fits him fine (not the pants though).
