Japanese Stick grenade

Another view. It took me over 35 years to find one of these babies to add to my small Japanese ordnance collection. The "holy grail" of all Japanese WWII grenades. I had given up when a friend emailed from Minnesota and offered it to me. A "picker" friend found it at a vet's estate sale.Attached Files

Doug,
Very nice stick!
I think it took me twenty something years to get the one that I own, but I had to learn the hard way about these grenades first. (The first one I bought was a VC grenade.)
Does your grenade having any markings? The one that I have doesn't have any markings, but I have seen them with markings (and rice paper instructions too) before.

Stick grenade marking
Originally posted by Doug SeeNo markings on this one. I read somewhere that these may have been Chinese stocks captured in the 1930's by the Japanese, or made in China during Japanese occupation. Either way, they're pictured in the US intelligence manuals as being in use.
Here are a couple of photos of my stick grenade with a painted stencil mark. Box is about .375 { 3 / 8 } square . The character inside reminds me of a navy inspection mark but being in a square instead of a circle.Attached Files

Stick grenade
Do not hink that is a Navy inspection mark. Other than a Type 3 rifle grenade, the paper on which is anchor marked, I have not seen a grenade marked with branch of service. I have two stick grenades, neither marked. I'm not certain what the holy grail of Japanese grenades is but I think it is harder to find than the Type 98 stick. I know the the Type 23 is much harder to find and I am lucky to have found two. The tail fin for the Type 91 grenade may be the holy grail as I have only run into two in my collecting and the price was large enough that I passed.
