    Snow camo helmets

I have two snow camo helmets. All indications are that these were picked up on Attu.

They match the same white paint as two other helmets with known provenance from that battle. They also have the same olive brown paint as three other helmets I have with Attu provenance. A relic snow camo was recently found on Attu.

Much of the middle and upper elevations of the island were snow covered when the battle started in May 1943.

Here is a period press photo showing the Battle of Attu.

I recently got this one, thanks to help and a trade with Striking 9th Scott! A battle damaged helmet, dated 1942, with underlying brown paint and green paint under that, also inside the dome. I believe the surname is "Yamaga". There were a few soldiers with that surname on Attu.

Clear battle damage similar to my other Attu helmets.

The paint and wear on these is remarkably similar, aside from the stars. Note particularly the wear on top, and the olive brown paint showing through.

Great helmet collection and information! You don’t get to see many Japanese snow helmets.

Cool stuff. If it helps any, the full inscription on the rim of your helmet is

I'm not 100% certain about [a counter for numbers] since it is missing some paint ... but that makes sense to me.
