I think the sword is gendiato as there’s a distinct nioguchi

Hi Nick,
Not one whose oshigata is illustrated in Slough's. He does list one at the back (4th Seat) - but without showing the kanji, so can't be sure it is him. He X-refs to Hawley Yos 1310, if that helps.

In the index at the front of F&G "Showa Swordsmiths of Japan 1926-1945", there are a couple with that unusual kanji for "kane" - one from Yamagata full name Ikeda Yoshikane and another from Seki, Taniguchi Yoshikane. I think it is the latter, which is shown in their earlier book, "Showa Swordsmiths", oshigata #96 (see below)

I found a two character Mei in the showato index
This blade looks gendiato to me
You can see a tight hada and the Hamon has activity and a clear nioi line
Was this smith known to make gendiato?

Two Showa-era smiths are noted by Markus Sesko in his Swordsmiths of Japan:

YOSHIKANE (義包), Shōwa (昭和, 1926-1989), Gifu – “Yoshikane” (義包), real name Taniguchi Kazue (谷口和兄), he worked as guntō smith, Fifth Seat at the 6th Shinsaku Nihontō Denrankai (新作日本刀展覧会, 1941)


YOSHIKANE (義包), Shōwa (昭和, 1926-1989), Tochigi – “Yashū Utsunomiya-jū Chikuzen no Kami Yoshikane” (野州宇都宮住筑前守義包)
