    Japanese flag opinions...

My overall opinion of this flag is favorable, however I'm having a hard time making out any slogans. Usually I can spot one or two.
    Thoughts?

    Regards,

I have some reservation of this flag as it does not give me that natural's smell.
        Anyway,
        1. Only
        2. Victory
        3. Tiles ( roof)
        4. intact, not destroyed
        5. Broken
        6. jade

I do not know about whether Japanese also has that 3,4,5 and 6, but it is a Chinese sentence ( but it should be written in 6,5 3 and 4 !)

Mr. Chen, in Japanese 玉砕 [gyokusai / shattered jade] means "banzai charge" -- the term probably was borrowed from this Chinese maxim.

            瓦全玉砕
            Gazen Gyokuzai
Honorable Death [玉砕 / shattered jewel] to a Meaningless Existence [瓦全]. The Chinese characters 瓦全 literally mean "全=all; 瓦= Roof tiles"

This was written by a civilian as an inspirational patriotic slogan ... not an encouragement to prepare for a banzai charge.

Here's the best I can do.

              Top:
              忠孝
              Chūkō
              Loyalty and Filial Piety

              Right margin:
              祝出征
              Shuku Shussei
Celebration/Congratulations for your Departure for Military Service

              押川義君
Oshikawa Aiyoshi-kun [not certain about the first part of his given name 義]

Bordering the Sun. Written in katakana by a girl named Yaeko; I have about a 40% comfort rate with this explanation:

              ヤエコ Yaeko
シゲゲンキデ Shige genkide [Shige, stay healthy; but Shige must mean something else, the kanji for his given name is not Shige]
二イショウケンメテ Ni isshoukenme [while making strong efforts]
              ヤテクイ。Yatekui [do it]

              義勇奉公
              Giyū Hōkō
              Loyal & Brave Public Service

              Poem:
              只勝利 / Mere Victory; advantage
大魂 Dai tamashī / Great Soul
忠勇無双 Chūyūmusō / Peerless loyalty and bravery
              加藤中将
Katō Chūjō -- Lt. General / Vice Admiral Katō

Written at a diagonal slant from 6 o'clock:
              撃ちてし奮闘止まむ
              Uchite shi funtō yamamu!
Never Quit Fighting and Making Strong Efforts!
The usual slogan is just 撃ちてし止まむ Never Quit Fighting

              8:30
一忠報国 Total Loyalty for the Country; original slogan is 一死報国 Die for the country

              必勝頑張
              Hisshō Ganbaru
              Strive Hard for Assured Victory

              9:00
              不言実行
              Fugen Jikkō
              Deeds, Not Words

              米英撃滅
              Bei-Ei Gekimetsu
              Destroy America & England

              忠老一致
              Chū rō itchi
              Conformity with loyalty and elders

              10:00
              必勝
              Hisshō
              Assured Victory

              洗心
              Senshin
              Clean your Mind/Heart/Spirit
