Japanese flags meet ball for translation

    Hello everyone,

Could you translate some insctiptions on these two flags please?
    Thank you very much.

    Flag # 1 in cotton:

    Flag # 2 in silk:

    #2
Flag #1 has a ton of signatures with all the names of the Japanese family name rainbow: Tanaka, Fukuda, Shimizu, Nakamura, Hirayama, Shimamura, etc.

Flag #2 is more colorful in content, but I will defer to others.

Thank you for your answer, Tom.
A subsidiary question, do you know why flags could be made of cotton or silk depending on the manufacturer? Some would be for families better off?

Thanks Tom, so I'll wait for more answers.

By the way, I'm not mistaken? # 2 is it silk or rayon? And the # 1 is cotton?

          Best regards.

I agree with your assessment of the flag materials. It looks like #1 is a cotton linen flag and #2 is silk or rayon. As far as cotton vs. silk, I am pretty sure silk would have cost more than cotton. I used to think that cotton flags were more of a late war thing, based on a collectors myth. The myth was that silk could only really be an early war flag material, as it was being used in war production for things like parachutes. Nick Komiya has proven through his research that silk flags were being produced late in the war as well. I cant remember the exact circumstance, but I think the silk industry was being subsidized by the government to keep it going during war time.

                Flag No. 2
                Right side from the top:
Patriotic Slogan: 祝出征 Celebrate leaving to attack the rebellious
Name: 稲村元君 = 稲村 Inamura, 元 Genshuu and at least 11 other possible readings 君 “Kun” honorific for young

On the left side of flag 2:
必勝神念 May the gods grant certain victory
                神田 Kanda, Kouda

That's about all I have time for. I agree that this flag looks like rayon.
