    Japanse Tanto

    Hello everyone,

Do you have any information about this type of Tanto?
Notamament if you have an idea of his period?
The tsuka and the saya are made of Magnolia wood. The tang is not signed. The hamon is straight. An added brass peg holds the tsuka to the blade.
Would you also have an estimate?

    Thank you so much.

And do you have an idea for his estimate?

          Thank you very much.

Kurigata broken/removed, *not* filled in; you can see the gap if you enlarge the image.

The ARMY did not use tanto and did not fashion them with gunto furnishings, combat covers, etc. The kurigata was probably broken through neglect.

                  Ok thanks.

So would you have an idea of the period of this tanto? And also an estimate, because it is offered to exchange, and I like it, but I do not have enough information on it.

The blade shape is an old style but you have to be careful because it might be
shortened. That said I value it at 2 hundred euros max.

                        Thank you for your answers.

How do we see that the piece of metal on the scabbard is not original?

Who used this type of tanto? Officers, Kamikazes, Civils... ?

In place of the brass, there would have been horn to match the handle.Tanto were carried to commit ritual suicide if the need arose.

                              Hi Remka,

                              I fully agree with Gunto.

Tanto in wooden mounts are very common. It is an old lady tale to believe they are related to military in any way. This is a seller argument to get some extra bucks from a civilian item. If you want to believe it, I will bring you a whole bucket of theese. Well, I would if I was dishonest.

Can't be advertised as military, kamikaze or whatsoever in this taste. Would be a fraud.

About value you'll have to figure it out with the owner. I would be reluctant to buy it for $50, because it have been badly restored. And the blade have weak hamon and small dings in the cutting edge.
