    Japanese Badge

    Hi,

I picked this badge up at an estate sale. I don't know if it is real or not. Also not sure what it is. Any help would be appreciated. I took a chance and I paid $35 for it.

    Thanks,

Reproduction of a company commander badge.
The reverse says REPRODUCTION in Japanese:

    複製
    Fukusei

Ahh, yes! Thanks. More proof that I don't know much (thus my many caveats that I'm no expert).

It is a copy of a War College badge.

An original Army War (or Staff) College badge for sale here.

Note the two-part construction and rivet seen on reverse

Thanks guys for all your help. There is also a badge like the original one that was posted but only it has a wreath around the star. What was that for?

            Thanks,

The wreath identifies a commander, the wreath indicates whether it is a company grade, field grade, or flag officer commander.

Rich Catalano has a good site for Taichō-Shō 隊長章.
These were instituted on October 12, 1943.
The three badges, from left to right:

              1. The General Officer's badge (将官 shoukan): awarded to those at or higher
than the Brigadier General rank. (5.5 cm long, 4.2 cm wide)

              2. The Field Officer's badge (左官 sakan): awarded to those ranked from
Major to Brigadier. (4.5 cm long, 3.5 cm wide)

              3. The Company Grade Officer's badge (尉官 ikan): awarded to those ranked
from Second Lieutenant to Captain. (4.5 cm long, 3.5 cm wide)
