Hello All,
I have recently purchased on ebay a rising sun flag from what I thought to be a reputable dealer from Japan.
Upon arrival I placed it under a black light and the whites glowed very vibrantly. I have an original Hinomaru yosegaki which I compared it to and will attach side by side images for your reference. My question is this, the Hinomaru Yosegaki I own is made of slik, the rising sun flag is made of cotton. Would this difference in material account for the vibrant whites in the cotton flag even if it was a period WW2 flag? Or is there something else I am missing?
I'd like to get a few expert opinions before contacting the seller.
In the attached picture, the Genuine good luck flag is on the left, the flag in question is on the right. Interestingly, the strings for attaching the flag to a pole, rifle, window or whatever appear to be contemporary to the period and do not glow under the black light? But the stiching on the edges of the flag do glow. Strange. Why would someone create a forgery but use authentic string for such a small element of the flag?

Thanks for your help folks,
Best regards, Scott
