New sword pickup; little different than usual

Just picked this up out of an estate with the coat; unsure if they go together but the soldier owned them both before his passing. The sword looks to be fairly older with iron parts, blade is interesting as ive never had one with a large and small fuller together (if im correct in my terms). Tang is unmarked and looks to have been cut down. There looks to be a hamon on the blade tho it is very hard to photograph in the lighting.

Ooooohhhh.... Question. There appears to be a raised portion under the leather field cover below the kurigata. Is there a small hook there?

The scabbard and fittings definitely are civilian.

There’s definitely something under there tho the scabbard is locked tightly inside the leather; is there any way to soften up the leather to get the scabbard out without destroying the leather?

It's possible but in my view very likely to result in irreparable damage. I would advise against doing so.

That looks like a very nice early quality IJA Company Officer tassel. Note the colors wrap around to the opposite sides.

        That piece peaks my interest!

        Thanks for showing,
        Stu

Does the sarute (tassel loop at end of handle) have any motif on it? Clasping hands or floral pattern perchance?

          Regards,

The tassel loop is totally plain
